Charles

Edward Mendez

In the short story Charles   by Shirley Jackson, there is a big confusing. There are a lot of different moods in the story. At the beginning of the story the mother is really exited that her little boy is staring school. At the end of the story that changes. When the mother heard her son say that Charles was behaving horrible she should of taken more notice and gone to the school. You don’t always know what someone is talking about. There are a lot of character traits in the story, mostly about Laurie (Charles).
Laurie is an angry person. When he came home he was really frustrated. One way you can tell that Charles is really Laurie is by, “Charles was bad again, he grinned.”(pg.1) This quote shows how Charles is really Laurie because in the quote it says that he grinned. That is a sign that he is lying. This relates to the thesis because in the thesis it says that “you don’t always know what someone is talking about”, the mother should of taking the grin as a sign that he was lying.  Another quote that shows that Charles wanted attention is “Charles yelled so much that the teacher came in from first grade.” (pg.1) This quote shows how Charles just wanted attention because that is what little boys usually do.
In conclusion, the mother kind of knows that Charles is Laurie at the end of the story. The teacher says that there is no Charles in her class. Overall the little boy was just trying to get attention. That is a clue that lets you know that Laurie is really Charles. I really enjoyed the short story, I like the way the story folded out. There was a shocking event at the end of the story, I was really not expecting. I would recommend this short story to everybody because it is one of the best story. It has really great dialogue and events.
